Welcome to the Jim Connolly's Tae Kwon Do school
At Springfield we teach Tae Kwon Do and Kickboxing, Taekwondo being a form of Korean Karate, formulated in recent times from the best of ancient techniques. The art can be both rewarding and useful to study, in addition to developing your well-being.
We follow a flexible and adaptable syllabus which is constantly updated to keep up with society's ever changing requirements. For juniors we concentrate on individual development and achievement, improving self-confidence, discipline and focus. With adults we stress the self-protection and fitness aspects.
Junior Classes
We teach children from age 5 in specific junior classes, with at least two instructors present for every junior lesson.
All our instructors have professional qualifications, insurance and are police checked.
Junior classes focus on developing the student holistically not just in Self-defence or kicking and punching. We want to improve a child's self-confidence and esteem, giving them the ability to resist peer pressure. We develop concentration, discipline and dedication skills that will aid them in their academic goals.
We have regular belt examinations (3-4 times a year) to help them measure their progress, gain a sense of self-achievement and of course have the ultimate goal of gaining a black belt.
As well as the belt testings we do regular badge testings, focusing on specific techniques.
In addition we run a free "Child Development Programme", where we work with parents in partnership on certain developmental goals for the student every 3 months. We set a home/school improvement goal plus a Taekwondo objective. If both are achieved in the 3 months, a gold medal is presented at the next of our award ceremonies.
We encourage all our student to follow the tenets or beliefs of Taekwondo

Adult classes
These classes are taught with several key aspects
in mind.
- Self Protection: Situational avoidance and awareness as well as striking, locks, blocking, takedowns, kicks etc
- Fitness: To be successful at self-protection you need to a have a reasonable level of speed and fitness, whatever your level now, we can improve it.
- Achievement: There are not many better things in life than achieving a goal that you deliberately planned and worked for over a period of time. I tell new students that a beginner is a black belt in disguise, and that we all have the ability to train hard, improve ourselves and gain the black belt, it just needs that dedication and commitment. We reward successful candidates at belt testings with a certificate and a new belt is awarded. There are 10 belt testings to black belt.
- Flexibility: Improving your flexibilty not only allows you to perform techniques easier but long term helps prevent injury and Doctors are researching into possible benefits with flexibilty with regards to Arthritis when older
- Art: The traditional side to Taekwondo was developed from ancient Korean martial arts. This aspect concentrates on the techniques and skills being performed with correct posture, method and breathing. It develops tremendous concentration and discipline skills while being challenging and rewarding
- Sport: For those inclined the sport side of Taekwondo and Kickboxing is one of the most dynamic activities available. We perform semi-contact sparring in competitions and for safety we wear full protective equipment so student can learn safely and confidently. This optional aspect of the art is useful at building up your fitness and ability to deal with unrehearsed attacks.
