First a little history (or click here to find out more)
The old Springfield Institute (pictured
left) was built using public subscriptions in honour of those who died in
the First World War (1914-18). The trustees of the Institute - the Westmoor
Brotherhood - gave the building to the people of Forest Hall, Benton, Holystone,
and Westmoor to be used for the Community.
It thrived for many years with the local authority took responsibility for the land in 1957. However, in the late 70's the building fell into disrepair and in 1980 vandals set fire to the building and the Institute was subsequently demolished.
And
Then:
Two years later a group of residents demanded action from the North Tyneside Council, and it was discovered that there was a substantial sum of insurance money arising from the demolishing of the old building. The Springfield Community Association was formed and, after some publicity and fund-raising, the new Centre (pictured right) was built and was finally completed in 1985. Sadly, vandalism has continued to cause problems over the years culminating in a fire in 1995 which caused the Centre to remain closed for a number of months. But support and use of the Centre has been gradually increasing during the last few years and we now have a brand new kitchen, and shortly hope to re-carpet the lobby.
